Treat expansion as a set of hypotheses
Entering a new segment or sector rarely succeeds as one large launch. It works better as a series of small, testable assumptions about who the buyer is, what they value and how they prefer to buy.
Four questions to answer in order
- Is the segment attractive? Size, urgency of the problem and competitive intensity
- Can we win? Fit between our product, proof points and the segment's needs
- Can we reach them? Channels, partners and the buying process
- Can we serve them profitably? Onboarding effort, support and pricing
Run a focused pilot before scaling
Choose a narrow slice of the segment, define what success looks like before you start, and set a fixed review point. Use what you learn to refine messaging, sales process and CRM setup before committing larger budgets.
